ABSTRACT

Introduction One of the adopted measures during the Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in education is the online modality, which can impact students' quality of Life (QoL) and their academic performance. Methods This cross-sectional study aims to assess the impact of online education on health-related QoL in a sample of 401 medical students. Results Most students attended all the online sessions, and around 32% participated in some of them. Only 16.2% reported high satisfaction from the online sessions, and almost 39% reported low satisfaction. Overall, medical students had moderate QoL. Online education affected medical students psychologically more than physically, translated by higher scores for the physical components than the mental ones. Students who preferred online over in-person education had significantly lower scores for the mental domains, namely lower social functioning and emotional role scores. Academic satisfaction did not influence any SF-36 scores, and students' preferences (online or in-person education) did not affect any of the physical component scores. Conclusion The pandemic directly impacted the QoL of medical students, namely their mental health. Medical students in Lebanon had a higher preference for in-person education, possibly due to its novelty and to other technological, technical, or personal challenges. Future research exploring the reasons and viable solutions should be performed to maintain a steady level of education during unanticipated situations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To understand the residents' perceptions of the, COVID-19 driven, newly implemented online learning systems adopted among accredited urology residency programs nationwide, and their sustainability following the pandemic era. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was designed and dispersed to urology program coordinators and directors to distribute to their residents. In the survey, Online education models was the all-encompassing term to describe any form of resident education that occurred online. Anonymous surveys were exported from Survey Monkey and data was analyzed for statistical significance. RESULTS: Over 70% of urology residents agreed or were neutral to the statement that Online education models were equivalent to in-person learning. Only 13% of residents stated that online learning should not be continued following the pandemic. Several different parameters were assessed, and only 5 of them showed statistical significance. Stress, personal engagement, interpersonal communication efficiency and non-verbal cues were all lower with online education models. The only attribute that was scored higher by residents was network connectivity issues. CONCLUSIONS: An overwhelming majority of urology residents in the United States believe Online education models should continue to be adopted once the pandemic is over.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at examining Japanese college students' extended learning experiences in an emergency online learning environment during the Covid-19 pandemic through adopting an interpretative phenomenological analysis, or IPA. Data from 124 weekly journal entries of 15 purposefully selected students and observation notes of two instructors made during a 10-week term were analysed following the IPA approach. Results revealed that students perceived both advantages and obstacles inherent in online learning. When encountering obstacles, the students experimented with several measures to overcome the obstacles and manage their emotions and so improve learning behaviours. Students experienced different emotional and cognitive states throughout the term. The results obtained suggest that those who see extended and flexible learning opportunities in emergency online learning and have positive psychology tend to pass through the states of anxiousness and frustration rather quickly and develop confidence in online learning at an early stage, whereas others who stay mostly frustrated and do not see advantages of online learning tend not to take advantage of the extended learning opportunities offered by online learning.

ABSTRACT

The activities of the world changed with the emergence of the COVID 19 pandemic, the closure of schools, universities affected the development of the education of millions of students, causing education to move to the online modality to continue with educational training. This research article aims to identify the teaching model applied online and to know the perception and assessment that students have of the online modality. The research corresponds to the descriptive type, a 25-item survey was applied to students of the Facultad de Organización Deportiva (FOD), (n = 321). The results show that students use smartphones to connect to classes from home. The online classes they have received have been mainly through presentations with synchronous interaction and communication through forums. The assessment that students have of online education is that they invest more dedication in their studies, but it is not reflected in their academic performance even though they have developed self-learning and teachers adapt to their personal needs. In conclusion, it is considered that the faculty and teachers must implement student-centered strategies that are contextualized to the online modality, that are creative, innovative so that learning is achieved, and critical thinking is developed. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Academia is experiencing massive reforms globally amid lockdown in COVID-19 outbreak. This study is aimed to apprehend the enabling and impeding factors of these reforms, with a focus on optometry education. It brings together how the Indian optometry educational system has responded to COVID-19 disruptions with findings of the 2020 survey, in light of similar survey done in 2018. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional survey was designed to find changes in optometry training and adaptations of Indian optometry educators amid COVID 19 lockdown. In the last week of April 2020, on the observation that the majority of optometry institutions have switched their teaching-learning activities on e-learning mode, an online survey was conducted using a validated questionnaire containing a mix of open and close-ended questions. RESULTS: Seventy-three out of 78 optometry educators (93.58%) have switched to e-learning mode in a very short time span with good confidence. Most teaching-learning and assessment activities are carried out using multi-device supporting video conferencing tools, dedicated educational portals and social media apps. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic is proving to be a constructive disruptor, giving an opportunity for restructuring the present conventional, classroom based educational system. The quick transitions to online mode assisted in keeping continuity of optometry education programs, effectively fitting in the purpose of completion of the current academic year. The rapid transition to online education has not only benefited optometry students but also has created a momentum of continued education for practicing optometrist in the country.
